The Great Harari Confusion
Yuval Harari writes very interesting books, but he also creates unnecessary confusion about humanism, as he talks for example about Nazi-humanism. Of course he has his grounds to call part of the Nazi ideology ‘humanistic’, but it seems an odd way to put things. Someone who understands humanism would have great difficulty calling that ideology humanistic. Why does Harari do this? If you like Harari’s work (like I do), it is a healthy thing to also read Michal Schmidt-Salomon’s excellent review that targets his confusing choice of words. (Original review in German)
Michael Schmidt-Salomon is an excellent philosopher who has written several books describing many of the core ideas that emerge from truthful reasoning and that lead to the sort of humanism to which also this website is dedicated. Unfortunately not much has been translated from German to English. For non-German readers there is the ‘Manifesto of Evolutionary Humanism‘. A highly recommend read!
The Amsterdam declaration 2002
In 1952, at the first World Humanist Congress, the founders of IHEU agreed on a statement on the fundamental principles of modern Humanism. They called it “The Amsterdam Declaration”. The declaration was updated in 2002, at the 50th anniversary of the World Humanist Congress.
